8th Annual Seattle Race Conference To Focus on Racism, Health Inequity, And Solutions To Eliminate Barriers to Healthy Communities

The 8th annual Seattle Race Conference will explore the theme: “Racism and Health Inequities: Eliminating Barriers and Healing Our Communities” during a one-day conference on Sat., Aug. 28 from 8:00am to 4:30pm at the South Seattle Community College Brockey Conference Center in West Seattle - 6000 16th Avenue SW in Seattle, WA.

The Seattle Race Conference is a one-day conference for members of the Seattle community who work with communities, health, education, human and social services, policy making, and care about health inequity. At the one-day conference, participants will attend workshops and engage in dialogue on the relationship between health inequity and racism in the Seattle area, meet other members of the community, and build relationships to continue to improve racial inequity in the Seattle area.

Conference attendees will also meet and hear from Spero Manson, PhD, (Pembina Chippewa), a distinguished professor who directs the Centers for American Indian and Alaska Native Health in the Colorado School of Public Health, University of Colorado Denver. Dr. Manson’s experience includes working at the national level at eight research centers across the country performing research, program development, and training among 102 Native communities, spanning rural, reservation, urban, and village settings. In addition, Ben Danielson, MD, a medical director at Odessa Brown Children's Clinic, will also speak on health inequity in the greater Seattle area. Dr. Danielson holds the Janet and Jim Sinegal Endowed Chair for the Odessa Brown Children's Clinic. The clinic has been an active part of Seattle's Central District since 1970.

Registration is available online at www.seattleraceconference.org. Participants should register for the conference before Fri., Aug. 13. There is no charge for South Seattle Community College student and staff who register before Friday, August 13th. Scholarships are also available to help cover registration costs.
